Reframing Addiction: From Judgment to Understanding

Addiction to alcohol and other drugs is a chronic but treatable medical condition. Many individuals never anticipate the impact addiction will have on their brains, health, decision-making, and relationships. This session explores common misperceptions about addiction, replaces judgment with understanding, and presents the science-based realities of substance use disorders.

Center for Learning Skill Builders are quick, 5–7-minute bite-sized courses designed to help you grow your skills in a way that fits naturally into your day. In the time it takes to order your favorite coffee, you can learn something new that strengthens your ability to support children, families, and communities on their path to well-being. Each small step you take adds to your confidence, knowledge, and your impact. The more skills we build, the more prepared we are to make meaningful, positive choices; choices that can ripple across families and communities for generations. Take a moment for yourself. Build a skill. Make a difference.

By the end of the learning session, participants will examine common myths about addiction, learn the science-based realities of substance use disorders, and build a more informed, compassionate understanding of addiction.

If this session expanded your understanding of addiction and encouraged a more compassionate perspective, continue your learning by enrolling in the Institute for Family’s asynchronous course, Unveiling Trauma and Addiction Learning Series, Part 2: Unveiling Addiction. This course examines the connections between trauma, substance use disorders, addiction, mental health, life outcomes, and family well-being. Take the next step in strengthening families and communities by deepening your knowledge and impact.
