Charlotte Region
Mecklenburg County — Hit a free sprayground
Mecklenburg Parks & Rec operates 9 free spraygrounds across Charlotte, including Veterans Park (covered!), First Ward, and Reedy Creek. Pack snacks and sunscreen and let the kids splash for hours.
Cabarrus County — Free library shows in Kannapolis & Concord
Cabarrus County Library's 2026 summer series features free dino shows, magic acts, puppet performances, and storytelling — no reservations required. Check cabarruscounty.us/library for the full schedule.
Union County — Explore Cane Creek Park
This 1,050-acre park in Waxhaw offers free hiking trails, fishing, and picnic areas right on Cane Creek Lake. Bring a cane pole and make a day of it with no admission fee.
Iredell County — Free July 4th festival in Troutman
The Troutman Independence Day Festival at the Iredell County Fairgrounds features live music, food trucks, kids' activities, and fireworks — all free admission. A perfect summer evening.
Rowan County — Dan Nicholas Park for $1
This beloved Salisbury park is free to enter, and most attractions — including a carousel, the Rowan Wildlife Adventures exhibit, and a splash area — are just $1 each. One of the best family deals in the state.
Gaston County — Hike Crowders Mountain State Park
Crowders Mountain offers free trails, rock outcroppings with panoramic views, and a family-friendly lake. No admission charge — just bring water and your hiking shoes.
Lincoln County — Visit Lake Norman State Park
Lincoln County's slice of Lake Norman has free hiking, swimming areas, and picnic shelters. A small fee applies for boat launch; swimming and trails are free.
Triangle
Wake County — Free fishing at Lake Crabtree County Park
No fishing license needed for kids under 16! Borrow rods and reels free from the park office and get a free mini-tackle box when you return them. Located just off I-40 in Morrisville.
Durham County — Swim free at Durham's splash pads
Durham's spraygrounds at Hillside Pool and Forest Hills Pool are free to use. On Durham Community Days, county residents also get free admission to the Museum of Life and Science with proof of residence.
Orange County — Spin tops at UNC's Ackland Art Museum
The giant interactive Los Trompos spinning tops on the front terrace of the Ackland Art Museum are free and totally mesmerizing for kids of all ages. Pair with a walk through Chapel Hill's Franklin Street.
Johnston County — Pick your own at a local farm

Guilford County — Country Park in Greensboro

Onslow County — Sea turtle tours at Karen Beasley Center ($7)
