Meet Maurice “Mo” Beam

Maurice “Mo” Beam, Placement Specialist at the CHS Morganton Office, has been named a 2023 Family Champion Awards Winner for his remarkable contributions to the well-being of countless young lives and the families that support them. For Mo, the most rewarding part of his work is the transformation he witnesses when doubt and confusion are replaced by hope, possibilities and potential in a child’s mind and heart. Removing these obstacles helps children see the bright future that awaits them.

Over his long and dedicated career, Mo has identified funding constraints as a significant stumbling block in providing the best support to children and families. He has seen how funding constraints affect the care provided and even influence policy decisions. Mo believes that in the past, resources were readily available for helping children and families. However, now it seems the focus has shifted to scrutinizing costs rather than evaluating the true impact of resources. Mo’s wisdom and experience call for a more balanced approach where the well-being of children remains at the forefront of decision-making.

The nature of Mo’s work demands significant emotional investment and time. However, he has discovered an extraordinary way of finding solace in it. With a heart firmly dedicated to the cause, Mo views his work and world as one. His passion is nourished by genuine connections with the children and families he serves, often seeing them as an extension of his biological family. Mo’s self-care practices are intertwined with work-related occurrences that bring joy and relaxation to his life.

“However, the positive impact on even one person’s life is worth celebrating. Moreover, he reminds future social workers that the role demands a deep emotional connection and understanding, a key element in making a real difference in the lives of those they serve.”

As partners and community members looking to support families better, Mo reminds us of the value of authentic human connections. While data, training, and financial support are essential, nothing replaces the power of looking someone in the eye and genuinely expressing concern for their well-being and success. Building solid relationships is the key to unlocking the potential for positive change.

Reflecting on what inspired him to embark on this noble path, Mo acknowledges his brother-in-law, a social worker for Mecklenburg County DSS, for over three decades. Watching him passionately impact lives in a professional yet caring manner left a lasting impression on Mo, igniting his desire to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable children and families.

For young people interested in pursuing social work as a career, Mo offers some invaluable advice. He emphasizes recognizing and celebrating small victories, which can be as significant as major accomplishments. In this field, success may not come with grand gestures or fanfare. However, the positive impact on even one person’s life is worth celebrating. Moreover, he reminds future social workers that the role demands a deep emotional connection and understanding, a key element in making a real difference in the lives of those they serve.

Mo Beam’s dedication to supporting children and families in North Carolina has made him an actual Family Champion. His commitment to building genuine connections, finding hope in every situation, and celebrating minor victories sets an inspiring example for everyone working towards creating a brighter future for those in need. As we honor him in 2023, let us learn from his experiences and strive to make the world a better place, one genuine connection at a time.
