In addition to LDS Family Services, the Leavitt Institute for Marriage and Family offers value centered therapy to those who not only incorporate values into their beliefs, but see these as a foundation for decision making and harmony in family life. Value-centered therapy aims at identifying those values consistent with one’s beliefs, and utilizing these as a resource in meeting interpersonal and relational goals.
Values help strengthen families in an ever-changing world. In contrast to trends that come and go, values provide a true sense of constancy. This may create a sense of friction as we live in and cope with the pressures of our environment, but it also provides each of us with safety and security among various opposing influences.
Our values determine much of what we do and why we do it. The effects of good values can build strong families and lay the foundation for great nations. The decline of values can diminish and divide the same. How we practice our values can be the source conflict or peace within our lives. Conflict arises when we endeavor to live in ways inconsistent with what we believe. If we believe we should be honest, but at times misrepresent the truth, we are likely to experience a sense of internal conflict, because we believe in one thing, but do another. Conversely, if we believe we should be honest in conduct and maintain true to that standard of living, a sense of peace and harmony can envelop our lives.
We invite LDS families to consider the Leavitt Institute as a viable resource in addressing family matters within the context of LDS beliefs and as and a place where values can be incorporated into therapy.
