Gambling Addiction

Money isn’t all that’s at stake

Gambling addiction, sometimes known as “compulsive gambling,” deals with a breakdown of impulse control. Compulsive gamblers have difficulty managing the urge to gamble, even after they recognize the damage is causing themselves and their relationships. Compulsive gamblers continue gambling despite being “up” or “down”, out of money or on a hot-streak, feeling good or miserable. Even when they recognize the odds are stacked against them, even when they are not in a position to lose, persons addicted to gambling can’t seem to put on the brakes.

Persons without a gambling addiction, however, can still have a problem. Problem gambling can be associated with any gambling behavior disrupting your life. A preoccupation in thought, spending more than one can afford, “chasing losses”, or continued gambling despite negative consequences, are all signs of a gambling problem. The sign of an addiction is when a person out of control. Another factor that has only increased the prevalence of gambling problems is the increasing popularity of online gambling sites.  Online gambling, such as online poker, has grown very popular and because of its ease of access, often leads to compulsive gambling.
